The paediatrician sent Elliott for a hearing test and a visit to the Ear Nose & Throat specialist. The hearing tests showed that Elliott had mild hearing loss and that he would need to have his adenoids removed and grommets inserted.
For such a long time I’ve worried about his speech development. I’ve tried to keep reminding myself that he had hearing loss for such a long time and which is likely the reason for the delay. But even that reminder is never enough to stop me worrying.
A number of people have told me not to worry, they explained that their kids just woke up one day and wouldn’t stop talking! To be honest, this sounded like a bit of a myth to me.
But, all hail, the myth is true, it’s happened to Elliott over the past handful of days.
All of a sudden he’s come out of his shell and is all ‘talk, talk, talk’. He’s started singing songs like row row row your boat and twinkle twinkle. He plays a little game with Mr. G and I where he taps us on the leg or arm and says ‘I got you’. He is using proper sentences and actually holding conversations! This is a huge milestone for all of us.
The ‘y’ has now been added to Mum and Dad too. For so long it was Mum and Dad because he couldn’t say the ‘y’ sound and now I just love hearing him call out ‘Mummy! Daddy!’
Elliott is 2 years and 9 months old and I have to say that the sound of his little voice and the way he pronounces his words just melts my heart. It’s truly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.
It’s taken such a long time, but the joy I have for this milestone is well worth the months of worry. I’d have to say it’s been the most joyful milestone so far because it’s been such a challenge to get here.
Was your child a late talker? Did they have their adenoids out or grommets?
