10 Fun Outdoor Play Ideas for Toddlers #MummyMondays

As with many toddlers, I have to change up our outdoor activities quite often because Elliott can get bored of the same activities quite easily (and so can I!). There’s only so much slippery sliding and ball kicking Elliott will do before he wants to try something different. He loves to wander, discover and get dirty.

We don’t have a sandpit or swing set yet, but little does Elliott know that it’s on it’s way for his birthday present from his grandparents.  But even if you don’t have a swing or a slide, there’s still heaps you can do if you put your mind to it. Here’s a list of fun outdoor play ideas Elliott loves to do in our backyard, especially in this beautiful Spring weather! The more outdoor play the better, I say!

1. Bubble Blowing
You can see my post on how to make bubble mixture here.

2. Enchanted Garden Play
You can see my post on our enchanted garden in a bathtub here.
If you don’t have a bathtub, create an enchanted or fairy garden in a pot or other container. Buy plastic animals (like the ones in this photo) and let your toddlers imagination run wild!

3. Chalk drawings on the concrete

Mess free drawing. For even more fun, wash it off with the hose afterwards.

4. Toy Washing
Take the toys for a swim or the trucks and cars through the car wash!

5. Discover & Collect different flowers
Smell the flowers, touch the flowers, feel the flowers and learn their colours (make sure they’re not poisonous though).

6. Pick Fruit & Veggies
Elliott loves picking his cherry tomatoes and learning the difference between the green and the red ones.

7.  Water Play Activity
This can be done inside or outside and is great for fine motor skills with pouring from container to container. Thanks to Learn with Play at Home for this idea.

8. Bird Watching
Look, listen and learn about the different birds around your home.

Meet our resident Kookaburra.

9. Gardening
Digging, planting and watering is so much fun!

10. Finger Painting
You can see my post on home made edible finger paint here

Some great ideas there Eva! Liam just LOVES playing with water. We start off watering the pot plants, then he wants to wash his truck, the windows, the dog……

Thank you so much for featuring our post on Kid Movies Need Kid Appropriate Music! It is definitely something I feel we owe our kids — to be kids a little longer!

No problems, it really opened my eyes and I’m now going to be very aware of it because I wasn’t before. Thank you.

I’m jealous you have a resident Kookaburra! We have to go to the zoo to see those! (Thanks for featuring P is for Preschooler’s post this week!)

Yep, he’s there most days and is pretty tame when we go to watch him. They are the most beautiful birds.

Thanks Winnie, I’m sure most Mums have done them before but I know what it’s like when you’re little one needs something else to do and you’re trying to rack your brain to think of something different, I hope that this list may jog some memories.

I love all these ideas! I have a restless two year old, so am always looking for new things for him to try. He just loves playing with bubbles!

Bubbles are a sure winner in our house, although my son loves to tip out the mixture which can be difficult!

Thanks this list of ideas! There is just something about water play that kids find so soothing. And bubbles are always a sure-win way to captivate them or calm them down. I like your idea of a car wash, might do that next. We’ve given the animals a bath and swim before, so can be our next play.

Thanks Serene. I’ve also put a bit of food colouring in the water to make it a bit different. Little E loves water play, it’s also good when it’s very hot!
