Us women may be the fairer sex, but we also do a very good job in business too!
So good in fact, women have a large impact on many economic and financial facts and statistics. So have you ever thought about going it alone and setting up your own little business? Just imagine being your own boss, making your own money and the excitement involved in doing so! I know I get excited when I send out invoices and manage my own business.
But yes, starting your own business and building it can be nerve-wracking. I’ve been there done that but it’s all made up for in the end, I promise. From a small side project on top of your usual job, to a full-blown new career, there are many possible options for women out there!
Here’s my round-up of four popular business ideas for women which I’ve personally seen thrive. But really, it all depends on how much time you want to put into it.

Freelance writing and blogging
An excellent way to make money from home is by becoming a freelance writer. I’m a freelance writer and it’s the best move I’ve ever made and am always super productive. You can blog about anything you like, from travel and food, to politics and economics. Basically, if you have a passion for the subject, over time you’ll develop your writing and eventually become a decent writer. Just like I did, you can buy your own URL and sign up to a blogging platform like WordPress for a relatively small cost. Even better, if you’re a whiz on social media, you’ll get going in no time. Of course, writing work won’t suddenly appear overnight, but if you keep writing, dedicate yourself to your blog and get your name out there, it’s likely you’ll scoop up an opportunity quite quickly. It takes determination, but it’s worth it.
Open a cafe
If you want to get out of the rat race, why not open your own cafe? You’ll be able to create your perfect coffee shop and design it to your tastes. Who wouldn’t want to spend their day baking cakes and making fresh coffees? The smaller it is, the easier it will be to manage. The bigger you go, you’ll have to consider employing staff, which would be an extra overhead to consider. But before you get to that stage, the cafe itself will be easy to set up. Sell crafts on Etsy
Etsy is an online platform for selling handmade items. Many keen sewers, knitters and craft fans use it as a marketplace for selling their unique creations. I know I’ve bought a number of gorgeous handmade gifts from Etsy, it’s my go-to place for handmade. Etsy is the perfect place to turn your pastime into a financial venture! You can either put items up that you’ve already made, or place a design for sale. If someone buys the design, then you will have to make their piece to order. The best thing about Etsy is you can be as busy with it as you like. That’s why it makes a great side project alongside your regular job!
Pet sitting
Love pets but don’t have one yourself? You can make up for this and make some cash by pet sitting! Pop an advert for your services in your local shop or on local notice board websites such as Craigslist or Gumtree. Pet sitting can include walking dogs, having a pet stay with you for a few days or for people like me that have chooks, coming over to check on them and feed them while we’re away. Be clear in your advert as to the exact services you offer and which kinds of pets you want to deal with. This kind of business might take some time to build up, but once people begin to hear about you and you gain a good reputation, it won’t be long before you’ll be inundated with requests!
