Behind The Scenes of My Child Magazine

My Child Magazine

Lise Taylor, the Publisher and Editor of My Child Magazine contacted me last month with her exciting news that the magazine had moved from a quarterly print version to a free monthly digital version with the June 2014 edition being the first digital copy.

My Child is a parenting magazine targeted at pregnant women, new mothers and parents of children aged 0-8. It is professionally produced, well-written, beautifully designed and features advice, articles, handy services and cool products for the modern mum.

The thing that really caught my eye when Lise told me about the magazine was its background and how it came into being. As a Mum with many business aspirations myself, I was truly inspired by her story which also has many uncanny similarities to my own.

My Child magazine came about after Lise gave birth to her son, Duncan, in May 2004. Lise admits to being a bit of a rebel at school and when she left, she ended up working in what she had never wanted to do – secretarial. But in the end, she was actually quite savvy in the secretarial field and worked in various corporate firms which then lead to her running various conferences around Australia. Lise finally moved into a University Degree where she completed a double major in English Literature before going into magazine publishing.
Lise worked in magazines for over 20 years but never looked at parenting magazines until she fell pregnant, but she found that many of them were just not her cup of tea. With the arrival of Duncan, Lise knew that she wanted to be around as much as possible for the first few years of his life but as is the case for many Mums, she also needed to work.

Considering these factors and factoring in the support Lise would have from her husband (My Child’s IT, Website & Accounts guru) she was prompted to start up her own magazine, My Child, which all these years later is still run from their home.

Lise admits that running the magazine has had its challenges and has thrown some steep learning curves, but the love she has for her job has made it the best thing she’s ever done. Lise is also extremely grateful for being able to balance her work life with being a Mum too.
Apart from the great articles and advice given in My Child magazine, a part of me wants to read it for the fact that it’s the blood, sweat and tears of a fellow Mum who followed her aspirations to have the best of both worlds, something that I aspire to every day. My Child is not a mass produced magazine owned by some corporate giant, but a magazine founded on family and the premise that Mums can do whatever they set their minds and hearts to.
