I Finally Found a Personal Trainer – The PeriCoach

I just had to tell you that I have found myself a personal trainer.  It was just meant to be, a match made in heaven.  I met my personal trainer at a Leakers Anonymous meeting, I was impressed by what I saw. My personal trainer is wonderful, sending me reminders via a special smartphone app so I keep on track.  I’m so excited to be one step closer to not peeing myself when I cough, laugh, run or jump! My personal trainer is one of a kind.

I’d like to introduce you to my personal trainer, The PeriCoach System®, the first training device, web portal and smartphone app to take the guesswork out of pelvic floor muscle training and it was invented right here in Australia.

It’s no secret that I have a really crappy pelvic floor, I’ve already written about it here and my inability to jump.  I’m part of the 37% of women in Australia that have this leakage problem. After I had Elliott there’s nothing else that freaked me out more than the feeling that I couldn’t control my bladder leakage.

So back to my personal trainer, The PeriCoach is a device that can detect pelvic floor muscle activity and measures the strength of each muscle contraction. It’s linked to a smartphone app via a wireless Bluetooth connection and provides real-time visual feedback on the exercises I perform.


How it works

So let’s just get this straight, this device doesn’t magically sync with your vagina by magic wi-fi signals (I wish), you actually have to insert it into your vagina. But the cool part is the sensor, it is what takes this device steps ahead of doing just your normal pelvic floor exercises, it helps you determine if your muscles are actually strengthening and visualises your results through the app.

When you use the device for the first time you have to calibrate it to your current muscle strength so you can use the measurements as a base for your workouts. I started on beginner level because my pelvic floor is nowhere near the advanced level. I’m still on beginner but working my way through.

When performing the exercises you have the option of either lying down or standing up. Standing up is a great option to fit in with your daily routines like doing exercises while you’re standing to brush your teeth in the morning and evening. For extra comfort, you can do it while wearing your underwear.

I was really confident and thought to myself ‘yeah, I can do it standing up, that sounds so much easier,’ but little did I know how weak my pelvic floor muscles actually were. The device shot out in an instant! Oops. Luckily I was doing it in the privacy of my bedroom otherwise it could have been a bit of an awkward situation. Suffice to say, I will continue my exercises lying down until I’ve worked up my strength.

Once you’ve sorted out your positioning and have calibrated the device, it’s all about following the app.

But let’s be frank, the PeriCoach isn’t going to knock on your door and drag you out of bed like The Commando would, so it’s still a matter of committing to PeriCoach exercises just like you would the gym or a run. Schedule it into your diary because although it’s not a quick overnight fix, consistent use of the PeriCoach will most certainly deliver results, just like any other muscles you put through a workout.

Why I love it

In my personal opinion, the $298 price tag of a PeriCoach is well worth the investment. It’s been developed by and backed by, healthcare professionals including women’s health physios, the exercise programs are specifically designed by leading pelvic floor specialists and I sure as hell would prefer to pay that then have to fork out money for pads and incontinence undies. And as much as they try to tell us that  incontinence undies look like ‘real’ undies, I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure there’s no way my husband would think they’re a turn on.

The PeriCoach is also an investment in my dignity, I don’t want to fear a wet patch on my running gear anymore or a trickle down my leg. And I want to be able to jump on the trampoline with Elliott again, it’s been sitting in my backyard teasing me for years.

Oh how I wanted to bounce on that giant trampoline into that foam pit. But I was in public and that wouldn’t have been a smart idea.

I’ve tried doing my own exercises, but the problem is I’ve never known if I’m actually doing them effectively or if my muscles are improving.  With the PeriCoach, you know.  But if you still feel you need some extra support, the great thing is that PeriCoach have a Find a Clinician page where you can locate a health professional to help you.

But seriously, there’s nothing normal about adult women wetting themselves. Why hide the problem when it can be fixed, not just covering it up?  It’s easy to tap into the humour of bladder leakage but really, it’s no laughing matter, there is a serious side, it’s our quality of life and it’s our dignity.

Just imagine being able to cough, laugh, jump and run without leakage! It’s possible. It’s actually really exciting!

    I have done a training session with a few trainers at the gym here and there and some were really awesome and worked me in ways I would not have thought of and heavier weights than I do on my own. But yea, others were just kind of like, wtf, this is lame… ????
