Italian Recipes for Kids: Red, Green & White Pasta Sauce

Although Elliott can be a fussy eater, he seems to have a taste for Italian recipes such as Lasagna and Spaghetti as well as Ravioli and Tortellini with either a red or green sauce. I always try to have a pack of Latina Fresh pasta in the fridge so all I really have to do is make the sauce! And with kids, its so important to hide the good stuff in the sauce!

Basic Italian recipes like the ones above are my saviour because they’re just so easy to put together. If you can spare half an hour to whip up a few sauce batches and then freeze them, all you have to do is pull out the fresh pasta, defrost the sauce and dinner is done (and the kids are getting their well hidden veggies).
What I’ve learned when it comes to kids too is that it’s not always about the taste and texture, but also about the colour of their food and I like to change it up a bit every now and then. So when it comes to pasta, we have Red, Green and White sauce!
Here are three different coloured pasta sauces we use on a regular basis with our pasta dishes:

Red Pasta Sauce

Italian Recipes for Kids Red Sauce

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
200g chopped bacon
2 teaspooons paprika
700g tomatoes (preferably roma tomatoes), roughly chopped
1 small zucchini, grated
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 pinch salt
150ml vegetable stock
2 tablespoons fresh flat leaf parsley (I used dried parsley as I didn’t have any fresh)
Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion and bacon for 4-5 minutes. Add the paprika, tomatoes, tomato paste and zucchini and cook for 5 minutes. 
Add the stock to the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for 5 minutes or until it has reduced. Stir in the parsley. 
Serve this sauce with any pasta of your choice. You can also use this sauce for your lasagne.

Green Pasta Sauce


5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
100g pine nuts
50g basil
50g grated parmesan cheese

Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a small frying pan and fry the garlic and pine nuts for 2-3 minutes until golden. 
Place the basil in the food processor or use a stick mixer to coarsely chop, add the pine-nut mixture, remaining oil, parmesan and 100ml of water. Keep blitzing until combined.
Stir through any pasta of your choice. You could also try mixing in chicken (cooked) or tuna (tinned).

White Pasta Sauce


50g unsalted butter
50g plain flour
500ml milk
100g green beans cut into 1cm pieces
50g grated cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon finely chopped chives
Melt the butter in a saucepan and whisk in the flour until it makes a paste and then gradually add the milk, still whisking. Add the beans and bring to the boil, stirring the mixture until it thickens. Simmer for 3 minutes or so until the beans are tender. 
Stir in the cheese until it melts and then add the chives. 
Serve this sauce with any pasta of your choice as well as chicken (cooked) or tuna (tinned). Stir in the chicken or tuna  when adding the cheese and heat through.

    Thanks for the recipes Eva. Liam is a big fan of carbs, and whilst he would be happy to sit down to a bowl of pasta with BBQ sauce and cheese (cheers to Scott for introducing him to that one), I like to sneak in a few veggies with a good meaty sauce.

    My kids love plain pasta with cheese. They’d live on it if they could. The Latina range is yummy and those sauces look great. I might have to try them and get the kids to branch out with their pasta toppings

    Get some baby gnocchi into those sauces. STAT!! Love pasta as do the kids and its one meal I can do that the whole family eats. Ill be cooking heaps soon and these ideas are really good in prep for a freezer stash for when the baby comes. Thanks

    My girls love spag bol. They like cream sauces but turn their noses up for other sauces. They don’t know what’s good! I am loving basil pesto right now, mine doesn’t have parmesan in it though xx

    I really wish my kids would try more foods. My 3 year old will not touch dinner unless it is ham and cheese toasted sandwich, My 5 year old will eat meat but not a lot of veggies. They both drive me nuts but at the end of the day they eat heaps of fruit so it kind of balances it out!! I love the look of your coloured sauces.
