Magnesium Oil by Amazing Oils – Review

I often joke to my husband that he needs to trade me in for a better model; I’ve always got some sort of ache or pain in my body. Not long ago I did my back merely reaching down to get something out of my sons bottom drawer. Having a two-year-old who always wants to be picked up isn’t helping my back either. Oh and then there’s the time I stupidly decided to do a five-kilometre park run just three months post-partum. What happened? Well, I stuffed my knees and have experienced the odd niggling pain since then.

Most of the time I knuckle down and work through the pain, I might get a massage from my husband if I’m lucky. But recently, I was invited to try some magnesium products by Amazing Oils that could potentially help with the pain. Amazing Oils are a family run and operated business on the Sunshine Coast and source their oils from local salt lakes of Australia. They only use organically registered magnesium chloride in their products.

Magnesium Oil Gel

How magnesium oil works

Magnesium oil products help to replenish magnesium levels in the body and assist with cell, bone and tissue health. Known as transdermal magnesium, it is not administered orally but externally by applying it to the skin. Of course, if you have a healthy, balanced diet, it’s likely you’ll have sufficient levels of magnesium in your body but, the World Health Organisation says that less than 60 per cent of adult men and women meet the adequate intake values for magnesium. This can often be because of alcohol consumption, stress and sugar which can deplete magnesium levels. Using products like Amazing Oils can help get those magnesium levels back up.

I don’t smoke or drink alcohol, and I’ve substantially cut down my sugar intake, but I must admit, I probably don’t eat enough vegetables and probably fall into the ‘not enough magnesium’ category.  I was amazed to learn that magnesium is required for 1,200 to 1,600 bodily functions, so it’s easy to understand why the body can be affected if it’s short on magnesium. It also explains the excruciating calf muscle cramps I get now and then when I stretch my legs!

“The therapeutic value of magnesium as a transdermal application reaches well beyond the potential of dietary magnesium,” confirms Dr. Mark Sircus, doctor of oriental and pastoral medicine.

Magnesium Spray

My experience with Amazing Oils Magnesium Products

I tried three Amazing Oils’ Products including the Natural Relief Oil Spray (from $21.95 rrp), Gel Roll-On ($27.50 rrp), and Bath Flakes ($25.95 rrp).

My favourite of the three products is the Gel Roll-on because of it’s ease of use and ability to reach my lower back without the need of assistance. My toddler paired with the crappy desk chair I have in my office (my boss is too stingy to get a new one – boss aka. me) means this one has always been at arms reach.

The spray was good for addressing larger areas or if my husband used it on my back. If I tried putting the spray on my back, I’d probably end up getting it in my eye.

Soaking in the bathtub with the Magnesium flakes has been one of my favourite things to do after a stressful and tense day. It brought the tension down a notch. It’s good to know that the Magnesium Flakes from Amazing Oils are organically sourced Magnesium Chloride flakes (Not Magnesium Sulfate!)

What I used magnesium oil for

I specifically used the Gel Roll-On for my lower back pain (muscular), knee pain (minor joint pain) and when I had a headache, I used it on my temples. In all instances, the pain either lessened substantially or disappeared for hours, a similar experience to as if I had taken a Panadol. When the pain returned, I applied again and experienced similar results.

In addition to assisting with the pain I experienced, Amazing Oils are also said to aid in the relief of:

  • Cramping and restless legs
  • Insomnia and poor sleep quality
  • Migraines
  • Arthritic pain
  • Healthy bone density
  • PMT-related cramps and tensions
  • Mild skin irritations and inflammation
  • Stress and nervous tension
  • Energy production and mood regulation

According to one magnesium study, the application of transdermal magnesium to patients with fibromyalgia, a condition with symptoms including ongoing chronic pain, body tenderness, muscle stiffness and fatigue, was a success. After two weeks of applying the magnesium to their upper and lower limbs, they noticed improvements in their condition.

From my experience using the Amazing Oils products and reading about the benefits of magnesium, I think there’s no harm in trying the product if you experience any of the conditions mentioned above. Like the Fibromyalgia study, it could give you some reprieve from discomfort, too.

Disclosure: I was gifted a pack from Amazing Oils for the purpose of carrying out a review. This is an honest review and written in accordance with my disclosure policy.
