The Best Eco Food Wrap Products For A Plastic Free Home

In July 2018, there was a statewide ban on single-use lightweight plastic bans in Queensland, and similar moves have been made in over 30 countries to do the same to stop plastic pollution and the devastating effects it’s having on the earth. It seems as though many people are starting to catch onto the push to reduce the use of plastic and it’s easy enough to do because there are so many great eco food wrap and reusable storage bag products out there.  For me, I’m doing it for the future of my kids and my grandchildren.

From beeswax wraps to replace clingwrap to plastic zip lock pouches that replace plastic ziplock bags, it’s very easy to move to environmentally friendly packaging and lessen your footprint.

Did you know that Australians use, on average, 130kg of plastic each and every year? Alarmingly only 12% of this plastic is recycled, and up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic makes its way into the ocean. Up to 95% of plastic is discarded after a single use.

We can start to reduce this figure by reassessing the plastic products we purchase and assessing our overall eco lifestyle, particularly when it comes to food items and assessing our overall eco lifestyle. I share some of the eco products I use, in the list below (and pictured).

What beeswax reusable food wraps can be used for

Think about all of the things you would normally use cling wrap for or plastic ziplock bags; reusable food wrap like beeswax food wrap can be used to cover the same foods and lock in freshness. Here are a few ideas:

  • Wrap uneaten fruit like an orange or avocado half
  • Wrap vegetables like greens and put them in the crisper
  • Cover a bowl of salad
  • Cover a plate of food
  • Wrap a loaf of bread
  • Wrap a bunch of flowers instead of using a plastic bag
  • Fold the edges and turn it into a pouch/envelope to store snacks
  • Wrap and store cheese
  • Wrap up sandwiches
  • Wrap up school and work snacks

The list could go on because there are so many ideas. Wherever plastic would normally be used, replace it with a reusable beeswax food wrap. The best thing too is that it can go in the freezer!

How to use beeswax food wraps

Beeswax food wrap is an eco-friendly wrap that is very simple to use and works on the concept of your body heat softening the wax. Simply grab the beeswax wrap in the right size, and whether you’re shaping it into a pouch, covering a piece of fruit or a bowl, the idea is to mould it using the heat from your hands.

Keep your hands over the beeswax wrap for a few seconds, and you’ll start to notice the wrap becoming more pliable and that it holds in place. Check out the video below; it’s quite cool!

How to care for your beeswax wraps

It’s best to be gentle with reusable beeswax food wrap to get the most from them. Avoid all heat sources like the microwave and oven. To clean, get a soft dishcloth and wipe them over with soapy cold water and then I rinse it off. Don’t use hot water or strong detergents.  It’s best to use a gentle detergent or even a gentle hand soap.

Put the wrap on a dish rack to air dry or softly blot the wrap with a tea towel.  When it comes to storing your eco wraps, keep them rolled up in a drawer or showcase the pretty colours in a bowl on the kitchen bench. Click on the links above for each brand of beeswax wrap for specific care details.

How to use the reusable storage bags

The Full Circle ZipTuck reusable storage bags are wonderful because you’ll save all the money you used to spend on the SnapLock bags from the supermarket. Whatever you might store in a jar, plastic container or a single use SnapLock bag is what you can put into a reusable storage bag. From coffee beans, fruit, school and work snacks to pastries, biscuits, slices and loose lettuce leaves, these are my favourite eco-friendly food packaging.

I love using the Emoji Design reusable storage bags in Master E’s lunch box, and Mr G uses the clear ones for his work snacks. They’re easy to clean too, just fill them with warm soapy water, give them a good wipe with a dishcloth, rinse and dry on a drying rack or tea towel. The other great thing about these is that they can either stand up on their own or you can lay them flat, depending on the contents.

What I think about these eco-friendly packaging products

All the products I’ve listed above I have used myself. The only thing I can fault is that I don’t have enough of them! Here’s what else I love:

  • They are all extremely versatile products.
  • The beeswax food covers really do mould into place, something I was a little apprehensive about at first.
  • I love the colourful designs of the beeswax wraps, nice enough to display or use to wrap a gift.
  • The reusable storage bags are very durable.
  • The reusable storage bags are designed to stand up or lay flat.
  • I love the produce bags because you can store your fruit and veggies in them too, so they stay fresher for longer.
  • I love the prints available in the sandwich bags.
  • The sandwich bags are great for the lunchbox and keep sandwiches fresh.
  • I’m saving money from not having to buy the single-use stuff.
  • The products have encouraged me to buy differently; instead of purchasing pre-packaged snacks, I try to buy in bulk and utilise the snack bags.
  • Although you can’t put the products in the dishwasher, they are still easy to clean.

Lastly, I just love what these products stand for. I cringe at the amount of plastic wrap and plastic snap lock bags we used six months ago. I remember thinking that if we were doing it,  millions of other people were doing the same.   Changing to eco food wrap products and reusable storage bags is the step we are taking to reduce the plastic problem and at the same time, assessing our overall eco lifestyle. The more people that make the changes, the bigger the impact.
