On of the things I yearn for is a long, hot, uninterrupted shower. Oh and to be able to go to the toilet in peace without Elliott calling out ‘mum, where are you?’ while banging on the door.
An uninterrupted shower you ask? Well yes, because Elliott isn’t overly fond of the bath. I mean, who wouldn’t want the chance to lie back, unwind and wash away the stresses and strains of the day in a bathtub? It seems my son fits that description unless he’s in a really strange mood and in addition to WANTING to have a bath, he also decides to eat foods he disliked only yesterday. Kids are strange like that.
There was one time when Elliott absolutely loved having baths, but now, those occasions are few and far between. I’m not sure if it’s because he thinks he’s going to get sucked down the plughole (I know I hated that when I was a kid) or that there is some type of bath monster (I blame a recent kids book for that) but it’s just a matter of letting it pass and having him join me in the shower to avoid an unnecessary tantrum.
But there’s still a problem when it comes to bath/shower time. Elliott ABSOLUTELY HATES having his hair washed. I mean, he really hates it and screams the house down. I’m surprised our neighbours haven’t come knocking yet. I’ve ditched the Johnson & Johnson no tears shampoo because, well, I’m pretty hesitant about using their products after this news AND it still bloody stings Elliott’s eyes! I’m now very aware of the chemicals contained in the products I use on Elliott and opt for an organic baby shampoo and body wash. What else have a tried? I’ve tried using my hand to protect his face, I’ve used a plastic jug thingy, but he still absolutely hates it. But, get this. I leave the bathroom and come back again in one minute and he’s standing under the water washing his hair by himself – no shampoo, just with water, but still?

So let’s just say that Elliott might get his hair properly washed once a fortnight. At least he’s not going to get headlice! Apparently they don’t like dirty hair. That can be my excuse, right?
And the bath thing, well, that’s just a bit overrated in our house. I’d rather not deal with tantrums and instead just get the washing part over and done with. The problem is, it still leaves me with less time for a shower by myself because he ALWAYS wants to join me in the shower. I guess I just have to lap it up while he’s happy to run around naked and see me naked, while we have no care in the world. I know there will be one day I’ll miss seeing his cute and tiny little bum cheeks!
Do your kids prefer a bath or shower? Do you dream about showering on your own like I do?
