Kids books are coming out of our ears in our house. We’ve got shelves full of them, including in our Kmart kids bookshelf. We also have buckets full of them and baskets full of them.
I’ve come to realise that buckets and big deep baskets are not the best way to store kids books; you can’t see the books and it’s not easy to get them out. I’m a huge fan of having kids books on display; it’s an invitation to read, and, it looks so much better and less cluttered. I’m also one of those parents who sort books by colour.
My love of Kmart
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Kmart home décor as you can see in my posts – 8 Very Clever Kmart Hacks, 8 Kmart Home Decor Hacks to Style Your Home on a Budget and 9 Kmart Vinyl Adhesive Hacks.
I find a number of people criticise Kmart, but I think that if you’re on a tight budget like many families are these days, Kmart works. Their decor also delivers a look that many people.
I have decked out my daughter’s bedroom thanks to Kmart and you wouldn’t know unless I told you. But, as you can probably gather, I’m having a little bit of a book problem. Some may say we have too many children’s books and should part ways with a few, but I just can’t. So, it was time to come up with some inspiring ways to store our books without our house looking cluttered. Also options that were easy to keep looking tidy.
Here are some quite creative ideas I’ve found.
Kmart Kids Book Storage Ideas
Kids House Bookcase
I absolutely love this Kids House Bookcase because, if you want, it can serve two purposes. It can store your kid’s books and it can be a dolls house. Keep scrolling for some more ideas on what to do with this Kmart bookshelf.

Kmart 8 cube unit bookshelf
We have an 8 cube unit which we use as a bookshelf with basket drawers, but it’s still not big enough for all of our books! The beauty of this cube bookshelf from Kmart is that you can use it in so many different ways. You can use it standing vertically, you can use it lying horizontally, you can use baskets and boxes for drawers and you can convert it into one big bookshelf by using two or even three connected together (see image below).

Kmart wire basket for book storage
These baskets are great for a number of things. Firstly, they’re great for getting a hold on kids clutter and can be labelled if you’d like to divide books into different baskets and categories. They’re also great for kids to see exactly what books are in the basket and they can sort through the selection of books without even having to remove them from the basket. Lastly, for only $4, how could you go wrong?

Kmart 3 Tier Kitchen Trolley turned bookshelf
Just because something says ‘kitchen’ doesn’t mean you can’t use it for other things! This kitchen trolley is the perfect bookshelf caddy for kids books and because it’s mobile, it makes it easy to push around the house to the best reading spot rather than carry a box or a handful of books.

4 cube unit
I didn’t want a big bookshelf to take up too much room in my daughter’s bedroom and so one of these 4 cube bookcase from Kmart was perfect to keep a select number of books in her bedroom. She has her little Kmart baskets on top where she also stores dolls clothes and LOL dolls.
Our favourite books on our Kmart bookshelf

Did you know? Mem Fox wrote the first draft of Possum Magic in 1978 and the draft was rejected by nine publishers! We are so glad that Omnibus Books finally accepted it because it’s one of our favourites!
Did you know? Before Julia published her first book, she was a singer and songwriter for children’s television.
Did you know? Since the publication of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in 1969, the book has sold over 38 million copies!
